The faith behind worship
23
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2
He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
3
He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
for his name’s sake.
4
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
5
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.
As most of us know, worship is more than just singing a song or two and lifting our hands. Yes that is a huge part in worshipping our God, but He also calls us to worship him in all that we do. I often find myself just going through the motions, and I start feeling like a mindless robot. The only way for me to escape that mindset, is to go back and remind myself why I worship, and Psalms 23 has just the thing. God is our shepherd, he brings us to better more fruitful places. He provides and looks after us. God renews us, and shows us the path we should take. The fact that God is willing to take care of us, a lost cause, should be enough for our worship, but he doesn’t stop there.
“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.”
Today’s world is a scary place, but God gives us a reason to walk in courage, not fear, because the same God who created everything we see, is right next to us. He comforts us in time of fear and in panic. He prepares a table for us in the midst of our enemies, and he anoints me with the Holy Spirit. And after all this, we know that if we are faithful, our lives will be filled with goodness, mercy, and eternal life.
These are the reasons we worship him. He is a Shepherd who cares, and a Host who will protect us at all costs. As you navigate your way through life today, remember who God is, and maybe take a minute or too just to thank him in worship. God loves you so much, that he even sent his own son to die for you. He will not forsake you!
